The Temple of Knowledge

The Temple of Knowledge

Ronald Clark’s father was the custodian of a branch of the New York Public Library at a time when caretakers, along with their families, lived in the buildings. He remembers literally growing up in a library, creeping down to the stacks in the middle of the night when curiosity gripped him.

Since 2003, StoryCorps has been helping people preserve and share their stories by recording conversations. By sharing these recordings, StoryCorps helps us "remind one another of our shared humanity, to strengthen and build the connections between people, to teach the value of listening, and to weave into the fabric of our culture the understanding that everyone’s story matters. At the same time, we are creating an invaluable archive for future generations."

One of my favorite stories is the Temple of Knowledge:
Ronald Clark’s father was the custodian of a branch of the New York Public Library at a time when caretakers, along with their families, lived in the buildings. He remembers literally growing up in a library, creeping down to the stacks in the middle of the night when curiosity gripped him. A story for anyone who’s ever dreamt of having unrestricted access to books.
